Yelp Profile - Luxury Dentistry NYC

"My smile is very important to me. I never really had huge issues with my teeth but I did have some spacing that I was not happy with. Deciding to get invisalign was one of the best decisions I've ever made. The hard part was finding a facility that would tend to my needs and make me feel at home. I researched for quite some time before actually picking a place, but I finally ended up choosing Luxury Dentistry.”

What is root canal therapy?

Root canal therapy is a procedure in which the nerve tissue, blood vessels and cellular pulp in an infected tooth canal are removed, the canal is flushed out, and the tooth is filled with a special cement. The treatment can become necessary when a tooth is threatened due to infection, decay or cracking. A root canal treatment can save the tooth and also prevent it from future infection.

There are various dental symptoms for which root canal treatment may be a safe and practical solution. These include moderate to severe pain when chewing or biting down on a tooth, as well as sensitivity to heat or cold. Also, a toothache that is severe enough to keep you up at night can be another reason to ask your dentist if you might benefit from a root canal treatment.

Is it painful?

Though "root canals" have become known as stereotypically painful procedures, modern root canal treatment is actually virtually painless with the use of a local anesthetic. After a treatment, medication can also be prescribed by the doctor to control pain.

The root canal treatment process

A typical root canal therapy can be completed in as few as two visits to Luxury Dentistry's New York clinic, though this may depend on the complexity of your case. During the first visit, Dr. Davidowitz will perform a "pulpectomy" or "pulpotomy" in which he removes some or all of the infected pulp from the pulp chamber of your tooth. By removing the pulp, he will be removing the majority of the nerve tissue, thus eliminating most or all of the pain. The doctor will then apply a temporary filling made of calcium hydroxide, which will help disinfect the inside of the tooth and surrounding tissue.

When the tooth is ready for a permanent filling, the doctor will fill it with gutta-percha, a type of natural latex, and seal it. The doctor may also place a crown over the tooth, which will help protect and preserve it over time.

After a root canal treatment

Following a root canal procedure, basic maintenance can help ensure the long-term health of the tooth. Because a root canal removes the insides of your tooth, the treatment can reduce the tooth's structural integrity. The tooth can also become more brittle due to decreased blood supply to the tooth. However, a crown over the tooth will help prevent it from fracturing, and getting regular X-rays can help the doctor monitor whether it is healthy.
