The root canal treatment process
A typical root canal therapy can be completed in as few as two visits to Luxury Dentistry's New York clinic, though this may depend on the complexity of your case. During the first visit, Dr. Davidowitz will perform a "pulpectomy" or "pulpotomy" in which he removes some or all of the infected pulp from the pulp chamber of your tooth. By removing the pulp, he will be removing the majority of the nerve tissue, thus eliminating most or all of the pain. The doctor will then apply a temporary filling made of calcium hydroxide, which will help disinfect the inside of the tooth and surrounding tissue.
When the tooth is ready for a permanent filling, the doctor will fill it with gutta-percha, a type of natural latex, and seal it. The doctor may also place a crown over the tooth, which will help protect and preserve it over time.
After a root canal treatment
Following a root canal procedure, basic maintenance can help ensure the long-term health of the tooth. Because a root canal removes the insides of your tooth, the treatment can reduce the tooth's structural integrity. The tooth can also become more brittle due to decreased blood supply to the tooth. However, a crown over the tooth will help prevent it from fracturing, and getting regular X-rays can help the doctor monitor whether it is healthy.
