Dental bone graft Treatment in NYC

Sometimes, teeth loss can cause the jawbone to atrophy or resorb. If you need dental implant surgery to replace your lost teeth, but your jawbone is not thick enough or too soft, you might need a bone graft procedure before implanting it. This is because your mouth's chewing action puts a lot of pressure on your bone, and you need it to be strong to support the implant. A bone graft will create a more solid base for the dental implant.

Dental bone grafting is a surgical procedure that replaces missing bone with material from the patient′s own body or an artificial, synthetic, or natural substitute. Bone grafting is possible because bone tissue can regenerate completely if provided the space to grow. As natural bone grows, it replaces the graft material, resulting in a fully integrated new bone region.

At Luxury Dentistry NYC, a premier provider of dental services in New York City, our in-house periodontist Dr. Julie Pastagia will discuss your options and make a recommendation based on your individual needs. We want to make sure that your jawbone is healthy enough before proceeding with a dental implant procedure, and we are committed to offering you the highest standard of care available in dental surgery.

Bone Graft Procedures

Here at Luxury Dentistry in New York City, we offer two procedures:

Socket Preservation Graft

This procedure involves placing bone graft material in the socket at the time of tooth removal. This graft will maintain the bone level and prevent the socket from collapsing after the tooth is extracted. A few months later, the site will be ready for implant placement.

Sinus Lift Procedure

The maxillary sinus is an air-filled space in the upper jaw located above the posterior teeth. If these teeth are lost, the sinus's proximity may result in insufficient bone available for implant placement. The sinus lift procedure involves elevating the maxillary sinus membrane and placing a bone graft onto the sinus floor, thus providing more bone to allow implants to be placed.

What to Expect During Your Dental Bone Graft Treatment in NYC

A graft is a slightly invasive procedure. That's why you need to put yourself in the hands of an expert such as our in-house Periodontist specialist Dr. Julie Pastagia. Dr. Pastagia will carefully advise you on your personalized treatment plan and determine the bone grafting material to be used.

The bone grafting procedure will depend on the purpose of the treatment. However, you can usually expect the following steps:

  • 1. Anesthesia. We will use a local anesthetic to numb the site where the surgery will take place. If the source of the bone graft is your own body or if you experience a high level of dental anxiety, you might also need IV sedation.
  • 2. Extraction and/or bone sourcing. If you are using your own bone (called an autograph graft), Dr. Pastagia will source the bone from the chosen location. Or a synthetic graft may be used.

If needed, at this point, also the tooth extraction will take place.

  • 3. Graft insertion. After thoroughly cleaning the area, Dr. Pastagia will make an incision in the gum to expose the bone and attach the bone graft material to the exposed bone.
  • 4. Stitching. Once the graft is in place, the area will be closed with stitches.
  • 5. Recovery. You will need to wait four to six months to achieve complete healing and be ready for your dental implant. Dr. Pastagia will provide you instructions for the aftercare and will closely monitor your progression.

Do You Need a Dental Bone Graft?

Bone loss in the jaw can happen for several reasons: aging, trauma, genetic or developmental defects, missing teeth causing bone resorption, or untreated, periodontal disease. If you plan to have a dental implant or need more bone to support the existing teeth, Dr. Pastagia might recommend a dental bone grafting procedure.
